Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe has confirmed what many have rumored over the past week - the Houston Astros are "very interested" in Pirates right-handed pitcher Gerrit Cole.
Cafardo said the Astros have been checking around on some top line starters for several weeks, and Peter Gammons suggested recently that Houston could afford to get a big name arm because of the stockpile they have in their farm system.
Other potential playoff contenders like the Yankees could drive up the asking price for Cole, so we will see if Jeff Luhnow and the Astros make a move sooner rather than later.
Cole is having another solid statistical season with just a 2.84 ERA, however has a 2-4 record due to lack of run support. Since 2013, Cole has recorded the following ERAs each season: 3.22, 3.65, 2.60, 3.88. He won 19 games in 2015.
#Astros targets #2 type starter & LH reliever. Interest includes: Quintana, Santana, Cole, Archer but not Vargas.LH relievers: Hand & Watson— Jim Bowden (@JimBowdenMLB) May 18, 2017
