Altuve, Gattis Lead Astros Past Angels 5-3

Jose Altuve got the night off on Saturday as he celebrated his 27th birthday. It appeared he used him time on the bench Saturday night to get ready for the game Sunday. Altuve crushed a single to left on the first pitch he saw in the first inning on Sunday. In the fourth with his club down 2-1, Altuve took the second pitch he saw in the game deep to left center for a three run home run to put the Astros ahead for good. The homer for Altuve, his fifth of the 2017 season.

Mike Fiers continued his trend of giving up solo home runs this season. Angels third baseman Yunel Escobar tagging Fiers with two solo shots in the game. Fiers has now surrendered a MLB leading fourteen home runs in his six starts this season. Twelve of the fourteen homers Fiers has surrendered this season have been solo home runs. 

Evan Gattis his first start of the weekend on Sunday, working behind the plate for Houston. Gattis gave Houston a insurance run in the seventh, blasting his third homer of the year. 

Mike Fiers worked out of plenty of tight spots on Sunday, picking up his first win of the 2017 season. The Astros are 4-2 in his six starts this season. Final line in the ballgame for Mike:

James Hoyt came on in relief for Fiers in the sixth, striking out the side in the frame. Will Harris followed Hoyt with two scoreless innings in relief. Ken Giles picking up his eighth save on the season, working a scoreless ninth. 

The Astros 22-11 start to the season matches their best start in franchise history. The win on Sunday pushing their lead to 5.5 games in the AL West over the Angels. They're now 5-2 on year against the Halos. 

The Astros have the day off on Monday. They return to action on Tuesday at Minute Maid Park for a quick two game series against the Atlanta Braves. Charlie Morton (3-2, 3.97 ERA) takes on Bartolo Colon (1-3, 6.27 ERA). First pitch, 7:10 on Tuesday, coverage starts with the Astros On Deck Show at 6pm on SportsTalk 790.
