Source: Texans re-signing DE Derek Barnett

The Texans are re-signing veteran defensive end Derek Barnett to a one-year contract after he excelled in the final stretch of last season for the AFC South champions, per a league source.

Barnett, 27, is a former Philadelphia Eagles first-round draft pick from Tennessee acquired off waivers last season. He played in six games with four starts and recorded 2 1/2 sacks, 19 tackles, eight tackles for losses and 11 quarterback hits.

In the playoffs, he played in two games with one start and had one more sck and seven tackles, two quarterback hits and two tackles for losses.

Barnett has 169 career tackles, 24 sacks, 45 tackles for losses and 87 quarterback hits.

Barnett joined the Texans after restructuring his contract one year after he tore his anterior cruciate ligament. He played in eight games for the Eagles last season and had three tackles and zero sacks.

Barnett is a former all-rookie and All-Southeastern Conference selection.
