The Texans are adding some experienced depth to their interior defensive line.
They’re signing former New England Patriots fifth-round defensive tackle Byron Cowart, according to a league source.
Cowart, 26, played collegiately at Maryland and Auburn.
He was released by the Kansas City Chiefs last week.
He had 27 tackles and one sack with three quarterback hits and three tackles for losses in 2021 for the Patriots.
He played in every game last season for the Indianapolis Colts and recorded 12 tackles, two for losses.

A former blue-chip recruit, Cowart (6-foot-3, 300 pounds) has run the 40-yard dash in 5.1 seconds, bench pressed 225 pounds 26 times and had a 30-inch vertical leap.
The Texans released veteran NFL tight end and former Klein High School standout Eric Tomlinson
This had marked the second stint with the Texans for Tomlinson, 31, a blocking tight end who has caught 27 passes for 280 yards and three touchdowns.
He caught nine passes for 79 yards and two scores last season for the Denver Broncos in 17 games and 12 starts, playing for new Texans tight ends coach Jake Moreland.
Tomlinson has also played for the New York Jets, New England Patriots, New York Giants, Raiders and Baltimore Ravens.
He went undrafted out of Texas-El Paso and signed with the Philadelphia Eagles before signing a reserve-future deal with the Texans.
The Texans also placed defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth on injured reserve. Stallworth has been recovering from a hamstring injury, according to a league source.
“It has been incorrectly reported that my client Taylor Stallworth has been put on season-ending IR with the Houston Texans,” agent Brett Tessler wrote on social media. “We will be doing an injury settlement on a short-term injury which would allow him to return there in the coming months or sign elsewhere when ready.”
The Texans worked out former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman Carlos Davis, according to a league source.
Davis worked out for the Jacksonville Jaguars at their rookie minicamp last week. Davis is a 6-foot-2, 320-pound former Steelers seventh-round pick from Nebraska who has 12 career tackles, three for losses and one sack
