Texans give away backpacks to 500 elementary school students

Huddled on the sideline at NRG Stadium, hundreds of elementary school students listened to Texans linebacker Christian Kirksey discuss the importance of education.

The Texans' entire team as well as coach Lovie Smith hosted 500 elementary school students from HISD schools and local YMCAs for a back-to-school backpack giveaway, interacting with them on the field. The students received school supplies in addition to a lunch and a field day.

"This is fantastic," Texans veteran long snapper Jon Weeks said. "When we're able to do something like this, this team embraces it and loves to give back to the community. We had so many guys that contributed. This has just been an awesome experience.

"We're happy to do it. We're always talking about stuff we can do. I have the privilege of playing with a group of guys that love to give back. We're always bouncing ideas off each other. I'm very proud to be a part of this group and very proud of how this turned out."
